"Leave It All Behind" by Starfucker
Although I’ve never been one to hesitate in extending a music recommendation, throwing out the band names and track titles like no tomorrow, I had a hard time trying to come up with a great post to kick off AvaPopEmpo: Tumblr Edition.
Should I go Lo-Fi Surf Rock or Electro? Hallowed, tried-and-true artist or brand-spanking-new band? Immensely popular or hip and obscure?
After much deliberation, I decided to go back to the very beginning, to the band that planted the seeds of the oak that would grow to be my music tastes and flower into the Avant Pop Emporium: Starfucker.
Back on April 11, 2009, more than halfway through my Freshman year, Starfucker came to play at at good ol’ Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA. Portland-based Starfucker had just released their self-titled debut album six months prior; I had bought Arcade Fire’s Funeral on vinyl and thought myself on the forefront of the music world. And then I went to the show.
That upbeat, pop-y combination of traditional rock instrumentation and electronic tonalities opened my eyes—this was the future, the Hegelian musical synthesis I never knew I craved so badly.
Fast-forward four years. Starfucker has released another great EP, an even better album, and a smattering of hidden-gem singles.
A little less than a month from now on February 19, Starfucker will release their third full-length album, Miracle Mile. The band has honed their vibe, and boy is their sound sharp. While Starfucker has launched several songs from their upcoming album into the webosphere, the one that catches my ear the most has gotta be “Leave It All Behind.” This song hooks ya in with it’s almost glitch-like, wavey synths before dropping away before some muffled bass and crystal-clear vocals, only to snatch you right up again.
This album looks like a keeper—let’s just hope we can wait a month.
